Why does the Dalai Lama want autonomy for Tibet rather than independence?

Not sure of the specifics, but probably because Tibet has publicly stated that it is an integral part of China. Tibet probably doesn't have the Political or Economic Infrastructure to support itself. Many places in the world are like this such as Aruba to the Netherlands, Pitcairn Island to England, etc.
