Why was Lamaism renamed to Tibetan Buddhism by scientists?

It seems weird. Do some people try to hide Turkic culture? It is a continuation of Tengri or Alla of Tengrism. Why is the name discredited? How do scientists discredit a name which Tibetans used. Does it sound normal to you?
